What Do Pastors Do and How? (Part 4)

As we conclude the month of reflection on pastoral ministry and its role in the life and ministry of the church, we come to a very practical element of ministry: overcoming difficulties.
Experiences of pain, loss, doubt, temptation, sickness, and suffering are inevitable in this world. God, understanding that every Christian will need help, established a simple yet effective means of providing it — the ministry of pastors.

Pastors Help People Overcome Difficulties

Among other things, one of the pastor’s tasks is to help church members in times of crisis.

When Job’s friends came to him during his time of crisis, they were completely unable to help. They were called “miserable comforters.

A pastor must be able to make the right decisions in difficult life situations.

Every person has their own weaknesses and tendencies toward mistakes and sin.

Furthermore, each person is in a certain stage of psychological and spiritual formation.

A pastor is someone who can look at a person and their situation objectively in order to see the real causes of what is happening and help them find their way out of a difficult situation.

Jesus Christ provides an example of remarkably precise and effective pastoral care in times of crisis.

He knew what to say to the scribes and Pharisees who brought to Him a woman caught in adultery.

He knew how to act when His friend Lazarus became ill and died.

He knew what to do when His disciples turned away from Him.

All these are examples of pastoral care in crisis situations.

Perhaps the most vivid example of pastoral ministry in crisis can be seen in Christ’s relationship with the apostle Peter.

  • A Failed Attempt to Walk on Water
Matthew 14:29–31 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

  • The Attempt to Rebuke Christ
Matthew 16:22–23 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

  • The Denial
John 21:15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

Thus, the tasks of pastors are very specific and clear. They are presented in Holy Scripture. A proper understanding of them, along with a genuine readiness to apply them practically, is one of the key conditions for effective pastoral ministry.
